TREC Speaker - Rev Sarah Jones

Published 17 October 2011
To mark the re-launch of the TREC community events and to commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Trans Resource and Empowerment Centre is proud to announce Rev Sarah Jones as our keynote speaker.  Friday, 18 November 2011, 7-9pm at the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, Manchester.

TREC Speaker - Sarah Jones

Sarah was ordained Deacon in The Church of England in July 2004. In January 2005 she hit the headlines when she was outed to a national newspaper as having made a gender change many years previously. The story was covered in many national newspapers and television stations and on web sites and blogs throughout the world.

Representatives from the media went to her parishes and asked people what they thought about having a curate who had made a ‘sex-change’. The people supported her.

She has since appeared on a number of television and radio programmes including ‘The Heaven and Earth Show’ on BBC 1, ‘Woman to Woman’ on Premier Christian Radio and ‘Woman’s Hour’ on Radio 4.

She has the support of her Bishop and was ordained priest in September 2005 despite criticism from some conservative Christians - even on the morning of the ordination itself.

Sarah is now the Rector of Ross on Wye - a market town in Herefordshire.

Come and hear Sarah talk about sex and gender; about gender changes and about being outed as the first person to have made a gender change and then be ordained in The Church of England.
